The Fiery Furnaces
Blueberry Boat
2004
The Fiery Furnaces has proven to be a very divisive band over time. But it was their first two releases that were gernally universally praised. Their second album, Blueberry Boat, proved to be stream of consciousness-driven epic affair. While Steve and I will both agree that this album is one of the greatest of 2004, I can’t help but feel that Steve might have a more personal connection with this record than I would. I remember when we were both really into this album and one weekend in high school he drove off over an hour away to see the band live. As they were playing in a bar, he wasn’t able to get into the venue (being underaged and all). Fortunately, he ran into Matthew Friedberger outside and was not only put on the guest list, but got his CD signed. May not be the most exciting story but it was pretty awesome at the time and still cool to think back on.
With this album, the lack of focus, even within individual songs, makes me think that Matthew Friedberger needs ritalin. But I’m not going to give him any. Inevitably, the complexity and unpredictability catch the listener’s attention and draw him/her into a wild realm with unprecedented rules. The impulsivity ends up being quite enjoyable. There are endless intricacies and details that make it possible to listen to the album hundreds of times and always hear something new. -R.C.
Stunning. The first half especially is total musical bliss. Track 3, the title track, is one of the richest 9-minute musical experiences I’ve ever had, as the Fiery Furnaces impeccable use of catchy melodies and unique sounds comes together perfectly. This band’s sound is so varied that they can even make songs about finding their lost dog sound incredibly interesting. Highly recommended. - Phil
And I'll never forget that you also made out with Ellen Friedberger that night, Steve:)
