The Dead Texan
2004
Sorry Mike, nothing heavy to be found here. Instead it's lush, spacey ambient sounds from one-half of Stars of the Lid, Adam Wiltzie under the moniker The Dead Texan. Created via hushed tonal swells, light piano lines and shoegazy guitar plucking, Wiltzie has formed songs he called "too aggressive" for Stars of the Lid. All of this is relative as The Dead Texan barely surfaces above consciousness.
Ambient music is an unusual form as it's goals are untraditional. It would prefer to float amongst your space rather than be intently focused upon. Stars of the Lid took their style to grandiose heights, already releasing a couple two-hour epic albums. The Dead Texan on the other hand writes spare and direct ambient tunes, many of the songs under four minutes and the entirety of the record is over after forty-six. This is beautiful and directly emotional music, anyone with an ear for the contemplative and stark celestial grandeur should find something pleasing. -S.R.
An album that really takes its time and is all the better because of it. The Dead Texan begins with an incredibly chilling opening track that puts the listener in the perfect frame of mind going forward. This is a record that one should abstain from other activities and simply devote 47 minutes to, for it is sure to make the listener reflect on life if taken in fully. Powerful, emotional, and beautiful. - Phil
